WHY DIABETIC PATIENTS NEED CUSTOMIZED DIET?

INTRODUCTION

Having diabetes makes us all more vulnerable to infection, both bacterial and viral. This is because an elevated blood glucose level not only provides an environment for these types of microorganisms to thrive and multiply but also interrupts the ability of our white blood cells to fight infection. Therefore, elevated blood glucose levels makes it harder for us to overcome an illness and thus increases the likelihood for complications to occur.

Most common complications of diabetes are Neuropathy (nerve damage), Nephropathy (kidney damage), Retinopathy (eye damage), cardiovascular diseases etc.

CAUSE OF DIABETES
The hormone Insulin in our body, helps carry sugar from the bloodstream into the cells. Once
inside the cells sugar is either converted into energy for immediate use or is stored for the
future.
Diabetes occurs when
  • the pancreas, a gland behind the stomach, does not produce enough of the hormone insulin OR
  • the body can’t use insulin properly.

ROLE OF DIET IN MANAGING DIABETES

A PROPER NUTRITIOUS DIET LOOKS AFTER OUR OVER ALL HEALTH
  • Nutrition and physical activity are important parts of healthy lifestyle.
  • Nutrition is a critical part of diabetes care. Balancing the right amount of carbohydrate, fats, protein along with fibre, vitamins & minerals helps us to maintain a healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle.

A BALANCED CUSTOMISED DIET HELPS PREVENT DEFICIENCY OF ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS

Magnesium
  • People with diabetes often have problems maintaining normal magnesium levels because as blood glucose levels rise magnesium is expelled from the body through urine.
  • As magnesium levels decreases, glucose control deteriorates because magnesium is essential to normalise carbohydrate metabolism.
  • Therefore, an effective way to manage diabetes is by regulating the magnesium level in our body.
  • Foods high in magnesium are green leafy vegetables, certain seeds and nuts.
Zinc
  • Zinc too, like magnesium, gets shipped out of body through urine when blood sugar levels start to rise. This results in zinc levels dropping to dangerously low levels.
  • This deficiency may impair the immune system which could lead to more infections. It also causes hair loss.
  • Thus, maintaining optimum levels of zinc in our body help strengthen our immune systems.
  • Zinc rich foods are seeds such as sesame and pumpkin, legumes like beans, lentis and nuts.
Vitamin D
  • One of the physical complications faced by the people with diabetes is loss of bone density and a deficiency of vitamin D put them at greater risk of fracture and osteoporosis.
  • A shortage of vitamin D also hinders blood sugar levels, making it more difficult to control diabetes.
  • Thus, by regulating one’s diet, we can ensure that the person gets the adequate amount of Vitamin D.
  • The major source of vitamin D is exposure to sunlight. Few foods naturally contain vitamin D. Those include salmon, mushrooms, egg yolk, fish oil such as cod liver oil.
  • Certain foods are fortified with vitamin D including milk, some juice products, yogurt, cheese.
Vitamin B12
  • If vitamin B12 deficiency is not remedied, permanent nerve damage can occur.
  • Neuropathy is common problem for people with diabetes who experience pain, tingling and numbness in their arms, hands, legs and feet.

GLYCAEMIC INDEX DIET

Glycaemic index is a number. It gives you an idea about how fast your body converts the carbs in a food into glucose. Two food items with the same amount of carbohydrates can have different glycaemic index numbers. The smaller the number the less impact the food has on your blood sugar.

One of the most effective ways of managing diabetes is through the consumption of low GI foods. Glycaemic index diet was thus, designed to help people with diabetes to control their blood sugar levels. This diet focuses on the goal of eating food that produce a steady rise in blood sugar.

Eating diet rich in low glycaemic index food is a great way to ensure your blood sugar is
regularly maintained at healthy level.

THUS, A CUSTOMISED DIET PLAYS AN INTEGRAL PART IN MANAGING DIABETES AND ENSURING THAT YOU LIVE A HEALTHY LIFE.
